I bought a Sentry Safe about 6 months ago at Office Max. We use it in our home office to store checkbooks, bank & brokerage statements, and other important documents.

Today I opened the safe to file some papers, and the door literally flopped off the safe, just like that. I took a look at the hinge side of the door. Guess what? The "hinges" are made with flimsy, hollow plastic knobs. They are so weak that I can bend them with my thumb.

Now every time I open the safe, again the door just flops off loose.

Sentry Safe's website addresses the security testing standards of their locks, but the hinge is so flimsy, that anyone could easily pry the it open with the twist of a crowbar to break the plastic.

This product is utterly ridiculous, a complete farce.

Monetary Loss: $100.

Location: Hayward, California

I had the very same thing happen and Sentry took no responsibility at all for the poor quality.

exact same thing happened to me today. what a piece of junk.

Same thing here. It's not about if it is theft safe or fire safe..The lid falls off, and won't go back in. Piece of junk.

No the company refused to replace the safe. I mean, even if they did, the lid would just flop off again.

Then I'd have 2 enormously heavy things that won't fit in the trash can, instead of just 1;) So even if they'd offered to replace it, I couldn't use it. It just bums me out to see companies like Office Max carry a deficient product, and they had no alternatives on the shelf.

Well there are 2 problems I have with the argument that it's "just for fire protection."

First, whatever the purpose of the safe, the lid should not flop off after less than a year of use. It should not flop off ever.

It should be constructed of quality.

Second, if it's not for theft, and it's a firebox only, why bother provide a key? The notion that it's called a "SAFE" and has a LOCK automatically means, under common assumption, that it will protect against theft. Imagine you buy a car. Then you realize it has no motor in it.

And the salesman says, "Well you bought a car. If you want one with a motor, you should have spent more." This is the same type of bs, in my book;)

Wow. You are so smart.

The box says "fire safe" not "Theft safe". And last time I checked cars have keys too and they get stolen all the time. Why don't you go out and buy a car and store all your keepsakes in your car. After all, you bought a "safe" that can be carried away be a thief.

Can the same thief carry away your car? And no, you never contacted the company.

If you did and if it was less then 10 years old they would have replaced your FIRE SAFE.

Some people appear confused. This isn't about a fire or a theft.

It's about the fact that the door flopped off, under its own weight, after 6 months.

I guess that's probably happened to your car door? Or are you so smart, that you bought a car with metal hinges?

Yes, I did contact the company.

Yes, they refused a refund. That's why I posted comments on this website.

Please troll elsewhere.

FYI The person I spoke with at Sentry Safe was named Phyllis. She refused a refund.

U got what you paid for.. Fire protection.

Thats all. You want Burglary protection you need to buy a safe that has a TL-15 or TL-30 Underwriters Laboratory rating ! Try ones made by AMSEC. There is a reason they are so cheap.

I only put documents I don't want to get Burned in these type safes. Now for REAL protection you will have to invest real $$$.

:cry :cry

Did the retailer or Sentry replace either safe? My lid flopped off this evening and I can't afford to purchase another one.

Same problem. Bought a Sentry safe and used it for a year on a daily basis and the hinge broke.

bought another one and the same story.

The hinge broke in less than a year. Will never buy another sentry safe again.
